Eugene, Oregon: a classic college town – with a twist
Eugene ranks among the best six U.S. cities in which to live (Money Magazine). We were named the number one green city in the U.S. for air quality, recycling, transportation, and green space (National Geographic’s Green Guide). Eugene is one of the ten most bicycle-friendly cities in the country (Bicycling Magazine) and listed by Rolling Stone as one of America’s Top 10 Campus Music Scenes That Rock.
Here, following your own path means taking a bike path, making a beeline for Thai or Northwest cuisine, strolling through the country’s oldest outdoor market, or hiking on trails right in town. It’s all here, in a safe, small-scale metropolitan area of 250,000.
Eugene’s weather is very mild most of the year. The temperature averages around 53 degrees (12 degrees Celsius) with mild winters, and long spring and autumn seasons. In winter, the hills around Eugene are dusted with snow. The valley receives relatively high rainfall (43 inches a year), most of which falls between November and May.
As a UO student, you can use LTD's extensive local bus system for free. The Eugene airport serves the area with domestic flights to cities in the Northwest, California, and Midwestern states, connecting you to international and east coast flights. Options such as Amtrak, Greyhound, and rental cars also allow you to explore North America in its entirety.
Your new home is ready to welcome you. Just pronounce it “you-GENE” not “YOU-gene,” and you’ll fit right in.
